Croatia on its way to EU accession
BRUSSELS: Croatia may wrap up membership talks with the European Union next year if it steps up preparations, but other candidates will have to wait, probably much longer, the EU's executive arm said Wednesday. In its annual progress reports on enlargement, the European Commission said Turkey, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Kosovo had made limited progress on the reforms needed to join the 27-nation bloc. "It should be possible to reach the final stage of accession negotiations with Croatia by the end of 2009, provided that Croatia fulfills all the necessary conditions," the Commission said. "With this in mind the Commission proposes an indicative road map for concluding technical negotiations." Turkey said Wednesday that it was "fully determined" to pursue its bid to join the 27-member bloc after the European Commission urged Ankara in a progress report to speed up reforms. "Turkey's full membership of the European Union is our basic strategic goal," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. "Our country will continue to fulfill its obligations on the EU process."
